Seoul started at 13th place when the GPCI was first published in 2008 and rose to 6th place in 2012. However, it fell to 8th place consecutively in 2020 and 2021, before rising back to 6th place this year.
Mayor Oh aims for Seoul to be ranked 5th in global urban competitiveness. Seoul City is promoting various policies to expand housing supply through revitalizing redevelopment and reconstruction projects to ensure residential stability, and to enhance urban transportation infrastructure with initiatives such as the Climate Companion Card, Hangang Bus, and autonomous dawn companion buses.
The overall rankings from 1st to 5th remained the same as last year. 1st place is London, UK; 2nd New York, USA; 3rd Tokyo, Japan; 4th Paris, France; and 5th Singapore. The 7th to 10th places are Amsterdam, Netherlands; Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE); Berlin, Germany; and Madrid, Spain, respectively.
