Busan Office of Education Produces the Most Science Teacher Awardees Nationwide This Year with 5 Recipients
Kim Jonghun, 5 Including Myeongmuncho Teacher... Contributions to Revitalizing and Popularizing Science Education
Busan Metropolitan Office of Education produced the highest number of winners nationwide, with 5 out of 30 recipients of the ‘2024 Science Teacher of the Year Award.’
Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Ha Yoon-su) announced on the 9th that five science teachers from the Busan area received the ‘2024 Science Teacher of the Year Award,’ hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.
First implemented in 2003 to promote qualitative improvement in science education, the ‘Science Teacher of the Year Award’ aims to discover and honor teachers who have contributed to the development of science education and the spread of scientific culture, thereby boosting teachers’ pride.
This year’s awardees are ▲Kim Jong-hoon from Myeongmun Elementary School ▲Shim Young-i from Yewon Elementary School ▲Lee Joo-young from Haewon Elementary School ▲Ahn Yoon-young from Busan International High School ▲Yang Tae-won from Busan Il Science High School, totaling five teachers.
Teacher Kim Jong-hoon contributed to improving the science education environment and spreading scientific culture through developing project-based classes using an intelligent science lab and creating an AI experiment safety assistant application.
Teacher Shim Young-i was recognized for efforts to revitalize and strengthen science education by developing creative science gifted education programs, various student-centered inquiry class methods, and sharing related cases.
Teacher Lee Joo-young was highly evaluated for contributions to improving science classes through developing AI-utilized science education programs, serving as an instructor for science experiment and professional development training, planning and operating science culture experience programs, and authoring publications.
Teacher Ahn Yoon-young worked hard for the advancement of science education by improving the laboratory environment at the Busan Creative Convergence Education Center, maintaining equipment, developing teaching and learning materials, serving as an instructor for experiment training for science teachers, and conducting capacity-building training for gifted instructors.
Teacher Yang Tae-won contributed to popularizing science by innovating on-site physics classes applying advanced technology convergence such as Python programming and drones, developing new exhibition texts for the science experience center, and producing explanatory videos.
The Busan Office of Education expects this achievement to serve as an opportunity to lead living science classes that apply scientific principles beyond theoretical lessons in the classroom to various areas of daily life and to promote the popularization of science.

The five award-winning teachers will receive the Minister of Science and ICT Award and a prize of 5 million KRW.
