Bae Junseong and Gu Hanhee Students Awarded
Theme: 'Spaces Preparing for the Future'
Students majoring in Spatial Design and Consumer Studies at Catholic University won the grand prize at the '2024 16th Korea Interior Design Theme Contest' hosted by the Korea Interior Design Association.
The Korea Interior Design Theme Contest is an annual event held to discover creative ideas from university students along with discussions on changes facing the spatial design field. This year’s judges were Kim Jeonggon, CEO of Between Space, and Han Seungjae, Director of Puhahaha Friends, both actively engaged in the domestic and international spatial design sectors.
The theme of this year’s contest was ‘Spatial Design Preparing for the Future,’ with a total of 239 entries submitted from 45 universities. Among them, the team of students Bae Junseong and Gu Hanhee from Catholic University’s Spatial Design and Consumer Studies department received the grand prize for their work titled ‘SECOND DRIVE.’
The students’ entry, ‘SECOND DRIVE,’ is a project that considered both societal needs and innovation. It proposed the idea of space not merely as a structure but as a place where people and technology interact to form new communities, creating a venue for shared experiences. This concept aligned with the contest theme of ‘spaces preparing for the future,’ demonstrating creativity, user experience, and sustainability, which earned the work its recognition for excellence.
The two students said, “We feel proud that the aspects we wanted to convey through our submission were well received. It was a valuable opportunity to seriously reflect on what good design means by engaging in the project process and seeing works from students at other universities.”
