Park Geun-hye and Son Sook Star in 'Salesman's Death' Opening January 7 Next Year
Until March 3 at Sejong Center M Theater
The play "Death of a Salesman," starring Park Geun-hyung, Son Sook, Ye Su-jeong, and Son Byung-ho, will be performed at the Sejong Center M Theater from January 7 to March 3 next year.
"Death of a Salesman" is a representative work of American contemporary playwright Arthur Miller (1915?2005). It premiered on Broadway in February 1949 and swept the major theater awards that year, including the Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize, and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play. Since then, various production companies have newly staged the play on Broadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play three times (1984, 1999, and 2012).
The "Death of a Salesman" performance at the Sejong Center next year is produced by the production company Show & Tell Play and was first premiered at the National Theater's Daloreum Theater in 2013.
In the 2023 premiere, Park Geun-hyung played the protagonist Willy Loman, and Ye Su-jeong played Loman's wife, Linda Loman. In this revival, actors Son Byung-ho and Son Sook join the cast, portraying Willy Loman and Linda Loman, respectively.
The protagonist Willy Loman is a salesman who has worked at Wagner Company for over 30 years. He is an ordinary family man raising his wife Linda and two sons, Biff and Happy. He especially firmly believes in the success of his eldest son, Biff. However, with the onset of the Great Depression, he is fired from the company, and his eldest son Biff fails to secure a decent job.
"Death of a Salesman" starkly reveals the illusion of the "American Dream" through the story of a family man losing his job and family amid the rapid social changes of the Great Depression. It also closely examines the inner lives of family members, prompting reflection on the true value of life and family.
