Sacheon-si, Samcheonpo Jukbangryeom Designated as National Important Fisheries Heritage No. 16
Multifunctional Resources of Fishing Villages, Biodiversity
Conservation and Activation for Preservation
Sacheon City in Gyeongnam announced on the 2nd that the Samcheonpo Strait Jukbangryeom fishery has been designated as the 16th National Important Fishery Heritage by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in 2024.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries designates and manages tangible and intangible fishery resources worthy of preservation as National Important Fishery Heritage to conserve and revitalize the multifunctional resources and biodiversity of fishing villages.
The Samcheonpo Jukbangryeom fishery is a traditional fishing method that installs bamboo-made 'V'-shaped traps in narrow coastal channels to catch fish such as anchovies carried by the current by trapping them inside the trap.
It is installed over a total area of 2,690 hectares (fishing ground area of 4.90 hectares) throughout the Sacheon Strait area.
With this designation as a National Important Fishery Heritage, the Samcheonpo Jukbangryeom fishery will receive budget support from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries for three years to restore and inherit the fishery heritage.
This designation was achieved because the city has focused administrative efforts since last year on promoting the historical significance and value of preserving the Samcheonpo Jukbangryeom fishery as a traditional fishery heritage.
In particular, significant roles were played by various activities carried out in unity by National Assembly member Seo Cheon-ho, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, the Samcheonpo Jukbangryeom Autonomous Fishery Community, and local residents.
Assemblyman Seo said, “I believe that closely communicating with Sacheon City and preparing strategies to actively respond greatly contributed to this designation as a National Important Fishery Heritage,” adding, “I will do my best to raise the value and awareness of Jukbang anchovies.”
