Expansion of the 'Songpa-gu Winter Vacation Native English Camp' Program
Songpa-gu to Recruit 160 Participants for Native English Camp for 1st and 2nd Grade Elementary Students
Play-Based English Education Including Science Experiments and Board Games from Dec 31 to Mar 5 to Boost English Confidence
Applications Open Dec 9 at 10 AM on SongpaRun Website, First-Come First-Served
Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it will operate a 'Native English Camp' for 1st and 2nd grade elementary school students during the winter vacation.
The district has planned and operated an English camp communicating with native speakers since 2024 to supplement the gap in public English education for 1st and 2nd grade elementary students and to reduce private education expenses.
Last summer's English camp was so popular that applications were filled within an hour. In particular, the native teacher classes tailored to the children's level and world culture experience activities received positive feedback from parents and students, such as "My confidence in English has improved" and "It was very helpful in developing a global sense."
Encouraged by the response, this winter vacation's native English camp will be expanded. The number of participants increased from 120 1st and 2nd graders last summer to 160. Classes will be held twice a week for 8 weeks from December 31 this year to March 5 next year.
The number of education locations has also increased by one. Special lectures divided by level into beginner and intermediate classes will be held at a total of four locations: SongpaRun Education Centers (Head, Wirye, Jamsil) and Songpa Community Center. Classes at Head and Wirye Centers will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while classes at Jamsil Center and Songpa Community Center will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, allowing students to choose their preferred days.
The beginner class is designed for students starting English, focusing on learning phonics and basic vocabulary. The intermediate class is a story reading course that develops the ability to speak in sentences through listening, writing, and speaking practice.
Especially this winter, along with native speaker classes, weekly science experiments and English board games will be conducted to make learning English enjoyable. During the 80-minute class, various experiential activities will provide an environment where students can naturally learn and express themselves in English.
Applications will be accepted from 10 a.m. on December 9 via the SongpaRun website. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis for 160 participants. The tuition fee is 60,000 KRW, including textbook fees, with discounts available for multicultural families and families with multiple children.
Previously, the district has focused on supplementing gaps in public English education and has been promoting various English education support projects. Since last year, it has directly operated 'Native English Classes' for daycare centers and kindergartens, receiving enthusiastic responses in educational settings.
