Hwaseong City Obtains Re-Certification as a 'Fair Trade City'
Five Criteria Including Ordinance Enactment Met... Valid for 2 Years
Mayor Jeong: "Will Continue Fair Trade Education and Campaigns"
Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province has extended its certification as a 'Fair Trade City' for another two years.
On the 20th, Hwaseong City announced that it received the third re-certification as a 'Fair Trade City' from the Korea Fair Trade Town Committee. With this certification, Hwaseong will maintain its status as a Fair Trade City for two more years until November 2026.
'Fair Trade' refers to a form of trade aimed at solving modern social issues by providing fair compensation to producers and workers in developing countries, ensuring trust through transparent and fair transactions, and protecting the environment through eco-friendly farming methods. The committee's certification system grants certification to cities, universities, schools, companies, and institutions that exemplarily practice fair trade through evaluation.
To receive Fair Trade City certification, five criteria must be met: ▲enactment of ordinances ▲increase in fair trade sales outlets or product items ▲addition of fair trade communities within the region ▲education and campaign activities ▲formation of committees and consultative bodies.
Hwaseong City has a total of seven 'Fair Trade Communities' actively engaged in sustainable development activities, including ▲Deobureo Sup Dongsan Church ▲Choi Eunmyeong Natural Honey ▲Hwaseong Urban Corporation ▲Banana Small Library ▲Cheongnim Middle School ▲Geumulko School ▲H&S Duriban. The city itself is also implementing policies to spread the values of ethical and good consumption, such as ▲Miso Camp (children's fair trade education) ▲Youth Fair Trade Classroom ▲Fair Trade Fortnight.
