Gwangjin-gu Designates Geonridan-gil Alley Shopping District... 9th Traditional Market Established
Three Years After Myeongok Market... Officially Designated as Alley-type Shopping District After One Year of Effort
Qualification Requirements Eased by Ordinance Revision... Nine Traditional Markets Secured with Merchant Association Registration
Eligible for Various Support Programs... "Expecting Synergy Effect with Hwayangjeil Market"
Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has newly designated the Hwayang-dong Geonridan-gil shopping district as the second alley-type shopping district.
Once recognized as an alley-type shopping district, it benefits from being registered as an Onnuri gift certificate affiliated store. It also qualifies to participate in various support projects hosted by Gwangjin-gu and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. However, since 2021 after Myeongok Market, there had been no commercial districts meeting the criteria, making designation difficult.
Accordingly, the district office has been working on revising the ordinance since March this year to lower the previously strict thresholds. A proviso was added allowing the exclusion of public areas such as roads and parks when calculating area, thereby easing the requirements. After a year of effort, the final review committee was held last month, and the merchant association registration was officially completed.
With this, Gwangjin-gu now has nine traditional markets. Based on seven recognized markets and two alley-type shopping districts, it strives to promote regional economic development.
The certificate awarding ceremony took place on the 15th. Mayor Kim Kyung-ho of Gwangjin-gu and Kim Do-dan, president of the Geonridan-gil alley-type shopping district merchant association, along with executives, attended and engaged in a communication session discussing the revitalization of the commercial district.
Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said, “We expect this alley-type shopping district designation to create a synergy effect with the nearby Hwayang Jeil Market and serve as an opportunity to inject vitality,” adding, “We will always communicate with small business owners and strive to implement various support measures to revitalize traditional markets, which are the backbone of the local economy.”
