Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced on the 14th the opening of the ‘Daehyeonsan Forest Book Shelter,’ a place where people of all ages can enjoy leisure while reading books in harmony with nature.
The ‘Daehyeonsan Forest Book Shelter’ is a cultural facility with a total area of 333.3㎡, created by utilizing idle space within Eungbong Neighborhood Park. It is a space for reading and communication that the whole family can enjoy together.
The first floor houses a multipurpose room and public restrooms, while the second floor features a ‘Cafe Shelter’ open to everyone and a ‘Kids Shelter’ dedicated to children and infants, allowing even young children to use the facility in a comfortable atmosphere. With a collection of 2,889 books, visitors can freely read from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., except on Mondays when the shelter is closed.
The shelter was constructed to minimize damage to surrounding trees and nature, and interior facilities such as wooden bookshelves were made using eco-friendly finishing materials to create a nature-friendly environment. Large windows and high ceilings enhance openness and natural lighting, harmonizing with the forest.
In front of the shelter, a specialized garden cultivated together with Seongdong-gu’s community gardeners has been created, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “I hope that at the newly established ‘Daehyeonsan Forest Book Shelter,’ people can feel the beautiful changes of the seasons and enjoy comfortable rest and leisure with family and neighbors.” He added, “We will continue to create various leisure spaces so that residents can enjoy the pleasure of reading and the joy of experiencing nature in their daily lives.”
