Chungnam Governor Kim Tae-heum: “Veterans’ Honor Allowance to Be Doubled Compared to National Average”
On the 12th, Kim Tae-heum, Governor of Chungnam Province, stated, "We will take the lead in honoring veterans so that the contributions of Vietnam War veterans are more deeply remembered in history."
At the 29th anniversary ceremony of the Chungnam branch of the Korea Vietnam War Veterans Association, held at the Provincial Government's Culture and Arts Center, Governor Kim said, "The sacrifices made by veterans who devoted themselves to the nation protected the freedom of Korea and served as a catalyst for industrialization, enabling us to become one of the world's top ten economies."
He continued, "We have raised the veterans' honor allowance to 400,000 won this year, nearly double the national average of 250,000 won," and emphasized, "Previously, depending on where you lived, there was a difference of as little as 50,000 won to more than 200,000 won, but we have resolved these disparities."
Previously, Governor Kim had promised to increase the veterans' honor allowance last year. Chungnam is the only province in the nation to have eliminated regional disparities. In recognition of these efforts, the province received a commendation from the Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs in July.
Governor Kim said, "I still believe it is not enough compared to the sacrifice and dedication of the veterans," and pledged, "With the determination that there is no end to honoring veterans, we will continue to implement proper veterans' policies through support such as veterans cards and commemorative projects."
He added, "Once again, I offer my deepest respect to all the veterans who defended our nation and liberal democracy with their passionate patriotism," and promised, "We will continue the spirit of national defense upheld by the Vietnam War Veterans Association."
