Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Pyeongchang-gun (Governor Shim Jaeguk) announced on the 8th that Daehwa Nonghyup (Chairman Kim Jinbok) held a farewell ceremony on the 7th ahead of the contract expiration of 20 public seasonal workers who entered the country from Laos on June 13.

View original imageDaehwa Nonghyup has been supporting a total of 2,250 public seasonal workers to 645 farms over six months by receiving personnel based on the cooperation agreement between Pyeongchang-gun and the Laotian government to reduce labor costs in rural areas and assist with busy work. This public seasonal labor project is scheduled to end on the 11th.
Accordingly, Daehwa Nonghyup held a farewell ceremony on the 8th attended by about 50 people, including Daehwa Nonghyup executives and employees and Lee Hyoseok, chairman of the Pyeongchang-gun Social Welfare Council, for the workers departing early that day.
The daily wage for public seasonal foreign workers was 120,000 KRW for men and 100,000 KRW for women, which was cheaper than the market wage, saving about 67.5 million KRW in agricultural management costs.
At the farewell ceremony for the public seasonal workers, Chairman Kim of Daehwa Nonghyup presented gifts such as cosmetics and daily necessities, expressing the executives’ and employees’ gratitude to the workers who sweated valuable efforts for the development of Korean agriculture in a foreign land for several months, saying, “We are thankful that everyone worked safely and will return to their homeland in good health,” and “Please do not forget our precious connection, and we hope to meet again.”
The workers’ representative, Luwan Intheum (41 years old), tearfully shared his thoughts, saying, “Thanks to the warm care of Daehwa Nonghyup executives and employees and Pyeongchang farmers, I was able to adapt easily in this unfamiliar foreign land, and I would like to come back and work again if given the opportunity.”

Meanwhile, Chairman Kim of Daehwa Nonghyup said, “The introduction of foreign seasonal workers has been a great help in resolving labor shortages in farms facing rural population decline and aging,” and added, “We will continue to expand the introduction of foreign seasonal workers to ensure there is no shortage of rural labor.”
