Based on Research Results of 'Paju Yukgyetoseong,' Archaeological and Historical Value Identified
Academic Conference Held on the 15th at the National Palace Museum to Reestablish the Status of Paju Yukgye Fortress
Paju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Kyung-il) announced on the 8th that, together with the National Heritage Administration's National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (Director Lim Jong-deok), it will hold an academic conference (symposium) titled "Reestablishing the Status of Paju Yukgye Earthen Fortress" on the 15th at 1:30 PM in the main auditorium of the National Palace Museum (Jongno-gu, Seoul).

View original imageThis academic conference is part of a business agreement signed in 2021 between Paju City and the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage for a mid- to long-term academic investigation of the Yukgye Earthen Fortress. It was organized to review the archaeological status and historical value based on the latest research results on the Yukgye Earthen Fortress.
The conference will feature one keynote lecture and four thematic presentations and discussions. First, the keynote lecture titled "Paju and Yukgye Earthen Fortress in Mahan and Baekje" will be delivered by Noh Joong-guk from Keimyung University.
The thematic presentations include: △ "Current Status and Archaeological Considerations of the Paju Yukgye Earthen Fortress," reviewing excavation results to date (Chae Song-yi, National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage) △ "Development Process of Baekje Hanseong Period Earthen Fortress Construction Techniques," comparing Yukgye Earthen Fortress and Pungnap Earthen Fortress focusing on the early Hanseong period of Baekje (Lee Bo-ram, National Seoul Cultural Heritage Research Institute) △ "Historical Significance of Paju Yukgye Earthen Fortress Seen Through Pottery," examining the content and nature of artifacts excavated from Yukgye Earthen Fortress (Jung Soo-ok, National Intangible Heritage Center) △ "The Origin of Ancient Korean Fortress Culture, Yukgye Earthen Fortress," discussing the historical position and value of Yukgye Earthen Fortress among fortresses in northern Gyeonggi (Baek Jong-oh, Korea National University of Transportation).
Following the presentations, a comprehensive discussion will be held with Professor Kwon Oh-young of Seoul National University as the chair, involving panelists such as Shin Hee-kwon (University of Seoul), Han Jun-young (Gyeonggi Children's Museum), and Kang Dong-seok (Dongguk University), exchanging diverse opinions with the presenters.

Woo Eun-jung, Director of the Culture and Arts Division, stated, "Paju City and the National Heritage Administration's National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage hope that this academic conference will enhance the value of the Yukgye Earthen Fortress and serve as an opportunity to explore future preservation and utilization plans." She added, "We plan to continue proactive administration by consistently creating opportunities to reveal and share the realities of local cultural heritage."
