[Opinion] The Birth of Quintuplets and a New Path to Overcome Population Decline
The recently born quintuplets in Dongducheon?Saehim, Saechan, Saegang, Saebyeol, and Saebom?have become symbols of new and powerful hope for our society, just like their names suggest. As soon as these children were born, messages of blessing poured in from across the nation, and they have received great love and attention not only from the citizens of Dongducheon but also on a national level. The quintuplets themselves are a special miracle and have established themselves as symbolic figures offering hope as a solution to the national challenges of low birth rates and population decline.
South Korea has long faced the significant challenges of low birth rates and an aging population. As population decline accelerates, the negative impacts on regional economies and social vitality are growing, with small local cities experiencing particularly severe effects. Dongducheon City is also confronting this reality and is making multifaceted efforts to restore regional economic and social vitality.
One representative example is that recently Dongducheon City strongly opposed the integration of post offices within the region. This was to ensure that the public services and infrastructure needed by local residents would not be reduced. As a result of Dongducheon’s strong request to the Korea Post Headquarters and the Gyeongin Regional Post Office to maintain the status of the regional general bureau, the status of Dongducheon’s general bureau was preserved. This decision remains an important case that sends a message that balanced infrastructure and service provision at the national level are necessary even in regions experiencing population decline.
Additionally, Dongducheon City prioritizes investment in education as a core strategy for regional development. Various efforts have been made to create an educational environment where local students can grow, including the ‘Dongducheon Dream Fulfillment Club Project,’ the ‘Student Autonomous Festival,’ and the ‘Gangnam District Office Internet Tuition Support Project.’ In particular, the significant expansion of the Hometown Scholarship and the establishment of a housing support scholarship have become important foundations to ensure that local youth can equally benefit not only in education but also in welfare.
Thanks to these steady efforts, Dongducheon City achieved the remarkable feat of being selected as a pilot area for educational development special zones this year. Under the goals of being a ‘city good for raising children’ and a ‘city nurturing global talents,’ Dongducheon is implementing various projects that harmonize education and welfare. Furthermore, the extension of the GTX-C line to Dongducheon has been confirmed, and the decision to relocate the Gyeonggi-do Job Foundation to Dongducheon has also been made. These are symbolic achievements that have laid the groundwork for Dongducheon’s growth through cooperation between the central government and Gyeonggi Province, marking an important milestone for new momentum in regional economic development.
Now, Dongducheon must take the birth of the quintuplets as a new starting point and move forward toward greater visions and challenges. Their birth has once again reminded our society of the importance of childbirth and child-rearing environments and has shown that raising birth rates and strengthening welfare benefits are urgent tasks. Dongducheon is using this opportunity to create conditions where the younger generation can lead stable lives and to become a city where more families can find happiness through various policy initiatives.
Beyond simply resolving population issues, the city aims to create an environment where all citizens can live with pride. To build a society where children can freely pursue their dreams and grow together with local residents, education, welfare, and infrastructure will be further strengthened. These efforts will serve as the foundation for sustainable regional development.
As the crisis of local extinction approaches reality, proactive and long-term responses from the central government are also required. Reflecting once again on the hopeful message conveyed by the birth of the quintuplets, it is time for local and central governments to join hands and open the future of the Republic of Korea together.
