Seongbuk-gu formed the ‘Gangbuk Transversal Line Seongbuk-gu Rapid Re-promotion TF’ on the 15th and has been conducting a district-wide signature campaign since the 18th.
Lee Sang-eon, chairman of the Residents’ Autonomy Council, stated, “It is regrettable that the Gangbuk Transversal Line, an effective measure to resolve the reality of the region facing development limitations due to neglect in transportation policy, was stranded before economic logic,” and called for the local community to unite in solidarity so that the Gangbuk Transversal Line can be rapidly re-promoted as originally intended.
Mayor Lee Seung-ro strongly urged, “The Gangbuk Transversal Line is the cornerstone of the city’s future and economic development, and it will be rapidly re-promoted as originally planned to improve the quality of life for 430,000 Seongbuk-gu residents and to achieve balanced development between the northern and southern parts of the river.” Additionally, Kim Hyung-jin, vice president of Kookmin University, representing eight universities located in Seongbuk-gu, emphasized, “The re-promotion of the Gangbuk Transversal Line is urgently needed for the growth of youth and universities and for the development of the local community and society.”
The Gangbuk Transversal Line is a light rail line connecting Cheongnyangni Station, passing through Jeongneung and Gireum in Seongbuk-gu, Hongje in Seodaemun-gu, Digital Media City in Mapo-gu, and extending to Mokdong Station in Yangcheon-gu. It was highly anticipated as a route that would effectively alleviate citizens’ inconvenience caused by relying solely on roads for travel between the northeast and southwest of Seoul, along with promoting regional balanced development. However, it was rejected in the preliminary feasibility study review by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in June due to low economic feasibility.
The resolution rally was conducted in the form of reading a resolution urging the rapid promotion of the Gangbuk Transversal Line, conveying the aspirations of local members, starting with solidarity speeches by Mayor Lee Seung-ro, National Assembly member Kim Young-bae, city council member Kim Won-jung, district council chairman Lim Tae-geun, and five resident representatives, followed by Lee Sang-eon, chairman of the Residents’ Autonomy Council; Mayor Lee; Kim Hyung-jin, vice president of Kookmin University; Won-gyeong, head monk of Simgokam and chairman of the Seongbuk Saam Federation; Kim Hyun-jung, pastor of Malgeunsaem Gwangcheon Church and chairman of the Seongbuk-gu Church Federation; and Choi Jae-young, parish priest of Jeongneung-dong Catholic Church.
Pastor Kim Hyun-jung emphasized, “Financial investment in transportation-disadvantaged areas is a public role,” and Head Monk Won-gyeong stated, “Economic logic that ignores regional underdevelopment means social conflict and disparity,” strongly urging the re-promotion of the Gangbuk Transversal Line for a harmonious and mutually prosperous community. Parish Priest Choi Jae-young said, “The Gangbuk Transversal Line is a promise with all residents, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the central government must solemnly bear the weight of public responsibility and promptly re-promote the Gangbuk Transversal Line.”
