Lee Jae-myung Meets US Ambassador, Expresses Concern Over 'Nuclear Development Domino'... Emphasizes Importance of ROK-US Alliance
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said on the 26th during a meeting with Philip Goldberg, the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, "I am worried that if North Korea's nuclear and missile development continues unchecked, it could trigger a nuclear development domino effect."
Lee stated, "The desire for nuclear development is growing within South Korea as well, and it might even lead to Japan developing nuclear weapons, which could cause a major crisis in Northeast Asia."
He added, "The current situation in Northeast Asia and the global geopolitical landscape is very fluid and undergoing significant changes. At times like this, Korea-U.S. cooperation is even more important. The situation in Korea is very unstable, and there is a high possibility of accidental clashes along the Demilitarized Zone, so I ask for special attention.
Lee also emphasized the importance of the Korea-U.S. relationship. He said, "Korea and the United States share a special relationship. It is clear that Korea exists because of the help from the U.S. The Korean people do not forget this fact, and the Korea-U.S. relationship has truly developed into a blood alliance."
In response, Ambassador Goldberg said, "The roots of the 71-year-old alliance between our two countries were forged through the trials of the Korean War, forming an unshakable military alliance. Today, our military alliance has evolved into a comprehensive global partnership encompassing trade, diplomatic policy, education, and many other areas."
He continued, "The relationship between our two countries is connected not only by shared interests and common values but also by very strong personal ties. A clear example of this is South Korea hosting the 3rd Summit for Democracy, a key initiative of President Biden."
