All Changwon Special City Residents Can Receive Free Citizen Safety Insurance Benefits
Social Safety Net Expansion: Social Disaster Death Compensation Increased from 10 Million to 20 Million Won
Changwon City, Gyeongnam Special City, has renewed its Citizen Safety Insurance for one year starting from the 22nd to ensure the livelihood stability of citizens affected by unexpected disasters and safety accidents.
The Citizen Safety Insurance is a policy for all residents of Changwon City (including registered foreigners and overseas Koreans with residence reports), with the city covering the full premium. All citizens are automatically enrolled without any separate application process and can receive benefits free of charge.
Citizens are eligible for compensation for accidents covered by the policy, regardless of where they occur nationwide, and can receive duplicate compensation even if they have other personal insurance policies.
Insurance claims must be filed directly with the insurance company (NH NongHyup Property & Casualty Insurance) by the individual or legal heir within three years of the accident date.
The coverage includes 24 items such as: ▲ Death due to natural disasters ▲ Death due to social disasters ▲ Death or permanent disability from explosion, fire, collapse, or landslide ▲ Death or permanent disability while using public transportation ▲ Death or permanent disability from bicycle accidents. Detailed information can be found on the Changwon City website or the Jaenanboheom24 website.
Notably, in 2024, the coverage amount for death due to social disasters (excluding infectious diseases) was increased from 10 million KRW to 20 million KRW. In the event of death from incidents recognized as social disasters by the state, including large crowd accidents, fires, and traffic accidents, 20 million KRW will be provided.
Park Seongok, Director of Safety Management, stated, "With natural disasters caused by abnormal weather and various social disasters occurring more widely, the role of the Citizen Safety Insurance as a social safety net is increasing," and added, "We will continue to expand and operate Changwon City's Citizen Safety Insurance to contribute to making Changwon a safe and secure city for its citizens."
Meanwhile, from September 2021 to June this year, Changwon City has paid out 800 million KRW for 3,573 cases through the Citizen Safety Insurance over the past three years. The main reasons for payouts include 19 public transportation accidents, 5 explosion or fire-related accidents, 7 school zone accidents, and 45 cases of death or permanent disability from bicycle accidents.
