Jungnang-gu Practices 'Carbon Neutrality' by Recycling Woody Waste Resources
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi) signed a business agreement with Cheonil Energy on the 20th to recycle woody waste resources.
Through this agreement, the district can now recycle the woody waste generated in the area, known as ‘unused forest biomass,’ into eco-friendly renewable energy in the form of ‘wood chips’ free of charge.
‘Unused forest biomass’ refers to forest byproducts generated from forest management activities that do not meet the standards for raw timber or are difficult to collect, thus hindering their use. These mainly include byproducts from thinning forests or pruning during the creation and maintenance of roadside trees.
The current annual amount of woody waste generated in the district is approximately 580 tons. The collected unused forest biomass will be supplied to Cheonil Energy, where it will be processed into wood chips, an eco-friendly fuel for power generation, and used as a fuel source by various power companies.
The district expects to replace 245 tons of coal and reduce 600 tons of carbon dioxide emissions through this agreement. Additionally, it will save about 60 million KRW in costs associated with woody waste disposal.
