From the first day of the Chuseok holiday, incidents and accidents occurred, resulting in three deaths. Two were traffic accident fatalities, and one was a violent crime fatality. In addition, numerous injuries from traffic accidents and a series of fire incidents were reported.
At around 10:34 a.m. on the 14th, at the Tapgok intersection in Eumam-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungnam Province, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) carrying a family of three slipped on the rainy road, causing the death of the driver A’s mother (in her 70s). A and A’s daughter were also seriously injured and are receiving hospital treatment. Earlier that day, at around 7:40 a.m., on a two-lane national road in Jeoksang-myeon, Muju-gun, Jeonbuk Province, a Santa Fe driver (in his 60s) died after colliding with a 5-ton post office cargo truck.
Earlier, at 6:56 a.m., on the Namhae Expressway Branch Line 2, a highway bus collided consecutively with guardrails and the central divider, injuring 22 people seriously and moderately. The bus driver in his 60s showed signs of decreased consciousness, and a man in his 20s and a man in his 40s sustained injuries to their chest and pelvis. A woman in her 20s suffered severe facial injuries. Among the seriously injured, two were reportedly thrown out of the bus due to the impact and were found on the opposite side of the road.
At 3:49 a.m., near Dangjin IC in the direction of the West Coast Expressway, a 22-ton cargo truck overturned. Approximately 16 tons of fertilizer in the cargo compartment spilled onto the road, causing traffic congestion.
Violent crimes also occurred in succession. At around 10:30 a.m. that day, a woman in her 60s, B, was found dead by her daughter in an apartment in Haeundae-gu, Busan. B had stab wounds on her body and was bleeding heavily. The police are investigating the circumstances of the incident by questioning people around her. A weapon presumed to be the murder weapon was found on a table in B’s home.
There were also fire incidents. At around 1:10 p.m., in Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, a man in his 60s who had returned from visiting ancestral graves with his family was engulfed in flames and suffered severe burns. Firefighters responded to a report that a man had set himself on fire and transported him to the hospital. The police suspect that the man attempted self-immolation alone after finishing the ancestral grave visit with his family.
