In September-October at Songpa Safety Experience Education Center and Bicycle Repair Experience Center... 'Songpa Run' Online Application
Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that starting from September, it will conduct ‘Bicycle Safety Education’ and ‘Repair Experience Education’ for beginner cyclists among residents to expand the base of bicycle usage culture.
Songpa-gu is a city with many flat areas and wide roads, creating an environment well-suited for cycling. It also has a large population of daily bicycle users, ranking second among Seoul’s autonomous districts in the number of ‘Ddareungi’ bike-sharing rides.
Bicycles are legitimate means of transportation subject to the Road Traffic Act, but awareness of safety rule compliance is generally low, and users unfamiliar with mechanics find it difficult to maintain their bicycles. Therefore, the district conducts biannual education sessions for local residents to establish a safe and convenient bicycle culture. In the first half of this year, a total of 52 people completed the training.
First, during the entire month of September, practical bicycle riding and safety rule education will be held at the Songpa Safety Experience Education Center. Starting September 3, intensive driving practice and safety theory education will be conducted over three days each week from Tuesday to Thursday. Each session will accommodate 15 people, with a total of three sessions offered, and any resident under 70 years old can participate.
In the safety education held in the first half of the year, there was high demand from those seeking to enhance daily vitality through health promotion, transportation, and leisure. Notably, 94% of participants were women, and 45% were aged 60 or older, highlighting the prominent participation of ‘elderly women.’
Participants shared their feedback, saying, “Thank you for the detailed instruction. The practice period was short, which was regrettable, and it would be great to have it more often.” A district official stated, “Those who wanted to learn cycling but had no opportunity participated enthusiastically, resulting in high satisfaction.”
The bicycle repair experience education, which teaches how to perform minor repairs by oneself, will be held every Monday for six weeks starting September 2 at the Bicycle Repair Experience Center (196 Munjeong-ro). Professional instructors will teach skills such as tool usage, tire puncture repair, and how to handle chain derailment?common issues cyclists may encounter.
In particular, the repair education received very high satisfaction, with all 13 participants in the first half responding ‘very satisfied.’ Many commented that “it was beneficial to learn a lot in a short time.”
Both education programs will take a break during the third week, which includes the Chuseok holiday. Those wishing to participate can apply online through the official Songpa-run website or by phone.
