Choo Yong-ho, National Intangible Heritage 'Sobanjang' Holder, Passes Away

Chu Yong-ho, a holder of the National Intangible Heritage Sobanjang, has passed away. According to the Cultural Heritage Administration on the 2nd, he was found dead in the yard of his house, where he lived alone and also operated a workshop, in Tongyeong, Gyeongnam, on the 30th of last month. He was 74 years old.
Soban (小盤) is a small table used to hold food bowls. The craft of making it or the artisan who makes it is called Sobanjang.
The late master specialized in the Tongyeongban, one of Korea's traditional soban types along with Haejuban, Najuban, and Chungjuban. It is a table made using wood with beautiful patterns or decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay, with carvings of motifs such as the Ten Symbols of Longevity and cloud dragons on the tabletop and cloud-shaped legs (ungak, 雲脚).

He learned the craft from Yoon Ki-hyun, Chu Ung-dong, and others starting in 1967. With traditional production techniques using old tools and outstanding skill, he was recognized as a Sobanjang holder in September 2014.
