Kim Seung-nam, Former Lawmaker, Appointed as President of Gwangju Urban Corporation
City Council Personnel Hearing on the 23rd
Pain Expected Over 'Politician' and 'Non-Expert' Labels
Former National Assembly member Kim Seung-nam has been appointed as the president of Gwangju Urban Corporation.
Gwangju City announced on the 1st that among the two candidates recently recommended by the Gwangju Metropolitan City Urban Corporation Executive Recommendation Committee, former National Assembly member Kim Seung-nam has been appointed as the 12th president of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Urban Corporation.
The Gwangju Urban Corporation is a public institution responsible for large-scale urban development projects, public construction projects, housing supply and residential welfare projects, management of sports facilities and public facilities, and is currently undertaking projects such as the development of the Advanced 3 District in the Gwangju Research and Development Special Zone, the creation of the Gwangju Energy Valley and Urban Advanced Industrial Complex, the AI-centered industrial convergence cluster spatial architecture, and the construction of integrated public rental housing in the Sangmu District under the Gwangju model.
According to Gwangju City, Kim, a two-term former National Assembly member, is considered the right person to successfully handle major projects requiring close cooperation with the National Assembly and government, as well as the key projects of the Gwangju Urban Corporation.
However, as per Gwangju City's explanation, since he is a politician by background and a non-expert in urban corporation affairs, there is skepticism about whether he is the right person to resolve the numerous pressing issues. This is why considerable difficulties are expected during the personnel hearing process at the city council.
The appointment procedure for Kim is scheduled to be completed after the personnel hearing at the Gwangju City Council on the 23rd.

Meanwhile, Han Myung-hwa has been appointed as a non-standing director of the Gwangju Urban Corporation. Han Myung-hwa is an urban development expert who worked for 19 years at the Korea Land and Housing Corporation, and is expected to leverage her experience in urban development and public housing construction. The appointment of Han Myung-hwa as a non-standing director is interpreted as Gwangju City's complementary measure to Kim’s appointment, who is regarded as a non-expert.
