The National Academy of Engineering of Korea announced on the 2nd that it will hold the Engineering Technology Development Forum on the theme of "Green Technology for Carbon Neutrality" together with the Chinese Academy of Engineering at the Shilla Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the 3rd.
This forum marks its second year. Key figures such as Li Xiaohong, President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Choi Namho, 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, will attend. Fourteen experts from both countries, including former Minister of Environment Han Hwajin and Sun Lili, Chief Scientist of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (China's top honorary engineer), will present in various fields.
They will share outstanding cases of carbon neutrality technology development and application from both countries. In particular, they will exchange information in green technology fields requiring long-term plans, such as zero-carbon energy and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), securing opportunities for policy, industry, and technology cooperation between the two countries.
Kim Kinam, President of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, said, "Carbon neutrality is an issue that requires active joint response with neighboring China," adding, "Through the forum, we can establish a future-oriented cooperative foundation for carbon neutrality between the two countries."
In the keynote speech before the sessions, former Minister Han will present on "Korea's National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets and Measures," emphasizing the importance of zero-carbon power and CCUS. Zhang Xiaoye, Research Fellow at the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, will explain China's carbon neutrality strategy for climate change mitigation.
Session 1's theme is "Development of Zero-Carbon Power Sources: Renewable Energy and Nuclear Power." Park Jin-ho, Vice President of Research at Korea Energy Engineering University, will chair the session. Yoon Byung-seok, CEO of SK Gas, will discuss the current status of Korea's zero-carbon energy business focusing on his company's cases.
Ju Han-gyu, President of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, will present on nuclear and renewable energy. Liu Zhijian, Director of the National Key Laboratory of New Energy Power Systems at North China Electric Power University, and Kwak Ji-hye, Head of the Solar Power Research Division at the Korea Institute of Energy Technology, will also present.
Session 2's theme is "CCUS." Jeong Byung-ki, Principal Researcher at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and former Director of the Green Technology Center, will lead the session. Kwon Yi-gyun, former head of the Korea CCUS Promotion Team, will present on overall domestic CCUS activities. Chief Scientist Sun Lili will explain carbon reduction technologies in China's petrochemical industry.
Kim Ki-soo, Head of Future Technology Research Institute at POSCO Holdings, will explain the status of CCUS research and development (R&D) and application in the domestic industrial sector, focusing on POSCO's cases. Min Byung-kwon, Principal Researcher at KIST's Clean Energy Research Center, will present on carbon capture and utilization technologies for energy.
