According to the Cheonan Dongnam Fire Station, a report was received at around 10:42 p.m. on the 22nd about a fire in an apartment located in Cheongdang-dong, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan.
The person who reported the fire was a resident of the apartment who was out at the time, but immediately contacted the fire department for help after being notified by their 17-year-old son, referred to as A, that a fire had broken out at home.
However, by the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the fire that had started in the air conditioner’s outdoor unit had already been put out. This was thanks to A’s initial response using a household fire extinguisher.
According to the fire department’s damage assessment, the only damage was 5 square meters of soot on the wall of the affected unit and damage to the outdoor unit’s wiring.
Given the late hour and the fact that many residents live in the apartment complex, the fire could have resulted in significant casualties and property loss if it had spread. However, A’s calm response allowed the fire to be extinguished early.
A stated to the fire department, “I was resting at home when the air conditioner suddenly stopped working. As I looked around, I saw flames and smoke coming from the balcony where the outdoor unit is located, so I immediately used the fire extinguisher to put out the fire.”
Kang Jongbeom, the fire chief, said, “As shown in this case, initial response using household fire safety equipment such as fire extinguishers plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of fire. I strongly urge every household to be equipped with residential fire safety equipment.”
