Seongdong-gu, Crosswalk Relocated in Front of Seongsu Station Exit 3
Expansion of sidewalk 10m south of crosswalk, installation of protective fences and bollards, starting August 26, completion by early September... Expected to prevent collisions between pedestrians and vehicles caused by queues during busy evening hours and improve walking environment
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that starting from the 26th, construction will begin to relocate the crosswalk in front of Exit 3 of Seongsu Station to prioritize pedestrian safety in the Seongsu Station area.
Seongsu-dong is a hot spot with 67 knowledge industry centers (as of May 2024) and many well-known companies located there, resulting in a large floating population. However, despite this, there are only four entrances to Seongsu Station, which were installed when the station opened in the 1980s, posing a safety risk.
In particular, Exit 3 of Seongsu Station experiences heavy congestion during rush hour (6-7 PM), with users lining up to enter the station and crowding the crosswalk, causing conflicts with incoming vehicles and increasing the risk of pedestrian accidents.
To address this issue, Seongdong-gu has been in close consultation with related organizations such as the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Seongdong Police Station, and Seoul City. In July, after approval from the Traffic Safety Deliberation Committee, a traffic system improvement plan for the area around Exit 3 of Seongsu Station was established.
Accordingly, the crosswalk will be moved 10 meters south, which is expected to reduce congestion around Seongsu Station and significantly improve pedestrian safety.
The district has urgently allocated a budget to promptly carry out the relocation of the crosswalk, sidewalk widening, and installation of protective fences and bollards, aiming to complete the construction by early September.
Seoul City will also quickly proceed with the installation of traffic signals for vehicles and pedestrians as soon as the detailed design is finalized, with completion expected within September.
To secure signal waiting space in front of Exit 3 of Seongsu Station and ensure safety management, the district removed one street vendor each in March last year and June this year, and completed the final relocation of remaining sidewalk business facilities (shoe repair stands) and street vendors (snack sales) by August.
Additionally, during the main congestion period on weekday rush hours, seven safety management personnel are deployed in front of Exits 2 and 3 of Seongsu Station to actively prevent safety accidents.
