Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) is making every effort to create spaces where residents can rest, enjoy, recharge, and feel happiness.
One of Korea’s famous mountains, ‘Gwanaksan,’ along with the stream flowing into the Han River called ‘Byeolbitnaerimcheon,’ is being transformed into an urban healing spot through various projects aimed at blooming residents’ happiness.
The district completed the ‘Gwanaksan Prime Park Development Project’ to transform the entrance of Gwanaksan into a landmark of Gwanaksan and a representative park of Seoul, and held an opening ceremony on August 23.
About 200 local residents, including District Mayor Park Jun-hee and district council members, attended the opening ceremony, which featured a street parade, folk song performances, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The entrance to Gwanaksan has become a popular destination for many citizens visiting Gwanaksan due to the opening of the Sillim Line, but outdated rest areas and deteriorated parking lots failed to meet user demand.
Accordingly, the district secured a budget of 10.1 billion KRW from Seoul City to create rest areas and parks linked to the Sillim Line through the ‘Gwanaksan Prime Park Development Project’ and pushed forward with the project.
The newly built Gwanaksan Prime Park rest area is a two-story building above ground with one basement floor, covering a total floor area of 1,960㎡. The above-ground floors include convenience facilities (such as general restaurants), and parking facilities were created on the basement floor and behind the building to enhance visitor convenience.
Along with the construction of the Gwanaksan rest area, the district created the first-ever 6,500㎡ ‘open plaza-style’ Prime Park in Gwanak-gu, transforming it into a venue capable of hosting various cultural events and large-scale festivals. This place will serve as a new cultural relaxation space and meeting spot for citizens visiting Gwanaksan.
In particular, an ‘Art Walkway’ connecting the ‘Gwanaksan Prime Park’ and the nearby ‘Gwanak Art Hall’ was created, allowing visitors to Gwanaksan to take care of their health and enjoy culture and arts simultaneously, expected to yield a twofold effect.
Additionally, the district plans to complete a project by early September to restore the section of Byeolbitnaerimcheon from the unrecovered main gate of Seoul National University to Dongbang 1-gyo Bridge into an ecological stream with flowing water.

Once the ecological stream restoration is completed, it will be possible to ride a bicycle from Byeolbitnaerimcheon to the Han River, and it is expected to be reborn as a new healing space for residents.
Park Jun-hee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, said, “With the opening of the Sillim Line, accessibility to Gwanaksan has improved, and the newly created Gwanaksan Prime Park allows many residents to use Gwanaksan more conveniently, which makes me truly happy.” He added, “We will do our best to make Gwanaksan a landmark space by attracting large-scale cultural events at Gwanaksan Prime Park.”
