View original imageBrahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 was completed 22 years after he composed his Piano Concerto No. 1. It is considered a grand work, so much so that the term "piano symphony" is fitting. Unlike typical piano concertos, it consists of four movements, and the conversational interplay between the piano and orchestra is impressive.
The Symphony No. 2, performed in the second half, is regarded as the most Brahmsian among the four symphonies Brahms left behind. Due to its bright, gentle, and pastoral atmosphere, it is also called "Brahms' Pastoral Symphony."
Conductor Yoon Merkle was born to a German violinist father and a Japanese pianist mother, and studied under Sergiu Celibidache and Gustav Meier. He currently serves as the music director of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, and is renowned as an authority on German symphonic and operatic interpretation.
