Gyeongnam Election Commission Reports Two Former and Current Local Council Members for Violating Political Funds Act
The Gyeongnam Election Commission reported on the 13th that it had filed a complaint with the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency against two former and current local council members for allegedly violating the Political Funds Act by providing money and valuables during the local council speaker election in June.
According to the Gyeongnam Election Commission, former local council member A is accused of providing goods worth about 1.5 million KRW to 15 provincial council members at the end of May, ahead of the second half speaker election of the Gyeongnam Provincial Council.
The commission stated that A donated political funds to current council member B by paying for the goods with corporate funds.
B is accused of conspiring with A to receive political funds.
According to the Political Funds Act, no one may donate political funds using money related to domestic or foreign corporations or organizations, and no one may donate or receive political funds in connection with local council speaker or vice speaker elections.
An official from the provincial election commission stated, "We will take strict action against repeated violations of the Political Funds Act, such as the distribution of money and valuables in connection with local council speaker elections, and work to prevent irregularities related to political funds to contribute to the development of democratic politics."
