Yeongyang County to Operate 'Voluntary Animal Registration Reporting Period' Until September 30
Yeongyang County in North Gyeongsang Province will operate a 'Voluntary Pet Registration Reporting Period' from August to September 30 to promote animal protection and prevent abandonment or loss of pets.
The animal registration system, implemented since 2014, aims to track the identity of companion animals and instill a sense of responsibility in owners. Dogs over two months old must be registered with the local government, and failure to do so may result in a fine of up to 1 million KRW.
During this reporting period, various benefits will be provided to those who voluntarily register their pets, including exemption from registration fees, free implantation of microchips, and priority support for neutering costs for outdoor dogs.
As of August 2024, 620 out of 810 companion dogs in Yeongyang County have been registered, resulting in a pet registration rate of 77%. If all dogs are registered during this voluntary period, Yeongyang County will become the only local government in the country capable of implementing a systematic animal management and protection policy.
County Governor Oh Dochang stated, "In an era where the pet population has reached ten million, pet registration is not an option but a necessity," and added, "We hope everyone actively participates in pet registration to establish a proper pet culture and minimize the occurrence of abandoned animals."
