Gijang County to Enhance Electric Vehicle Charging Safety... Expansion of 'Apartment Complex Management Support Project'
2025 Budget Set at 1 Billion Won, Additional 300 Million Won Secured
Gijang-gun (Governor Jung Jongbok) announced on the 12th that it will expand the ‘Apartment Complex Management Support Project’ starting in 2025 to strengthen safety management of electric vehicle charging facilities in underground areas of apartment complexes.
Recently, a series of fires have occurred at electric vehicle charging facilities in the underground levels of apartment complexes, raising concerns and calls for practical measures to improve the safety management of these charging facilities.
In particular, if an electric vehicle fire breaks out in an underground parking lot, it is difficult for fire trucks to access the sealed underground area, which could potentially lead to a major disaster. Although central government agencies are taking action by supporting the installation of safety facilities to prepare for electric vehicle fires, the lack of sufficient budget means that these efforts have not produced significant results.
In response, Gijang-gun plans to expand the Apartment Complex Management Support Project to provide financial support for the purchase and installation of safety equipment to prevent and respond to electric vehicle fires.
When drafting the main budget for 2025, the county plans to increase the project budget by 300 million KRW, from the current 700 million KRW to 1 billion KRW, to support the relocation of electric vehicle charging facilities to above ground and the purchase of fire-suppressing foam for extinguishing fires.
Jung Jongbok, Governor of Gijang-gun, said, “We hope that the expansion of this support project will help create a safer residential environment from electric vehicle fires,” and added, “For effective response to electric vehicle fires, we recommend that newly installed electric vehicle charging facilities be placed above ground.”
