Daejeon Fire Department Urges Caution Against Frequent Bee Stings in Summer
72.7% of Emergency Calls Occur in Summer
Avoid Bee-Attracting Perfumes; Call 119 Immediately if Stung
The Daejeon Fire Headquarters has issued a warning regarding bee sting incidents during the summer season.
According to the Daejeon Fire Headquarters on the 9th, the number of dispatches for beehive removal over the past two years was 2,120 cases in 2022 and 3,041 cases in 2023.
Last year, by season, there were 155 cases in spring, 2,212 in summer, 668 in fall, and 6 in winter, with summer accounting for 72.7% of all dispatches.
The sharp increase in reports of beehive removal during summer is closely related to the life cycle of wasps, whose activity and population surge due to rising temperatures.
To prevent bee stings, it is advised to refrain from using perfumes, cosmetics, and sprays that may attract bees, wear light-colored rather than dark clothing, and choose long-sleeved white clothes to minimize exposure of arms and legs.
If you accidentally disturb a beehive during outdoor activities, cover your head, lower your posture, and quickly run more than 20 meters away.
If stung by a bee, use a credit card or similar object to promptly remove the stinger, disinfect or wash the affected area with clean water to prevent infection, and apply an ice pack to reduce pain.
Since the venom of wasps is much stronger than expected, if symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, hives, or especially anaphylactic shock due to allergies occur, you should immediately call 119 or go to a hospital for treatment.
Kang Daehoon, Chief of Daejeon Fire Headquarters, said, "As beehive reports increase during the summer, special caution is required to prevent bee sting incidents during outdoor activities such as hiking and traveling."
