Attending the meeting were Kwon Hyukwon, Director of Job and Economy at Pohang City, Jeong Wonjo from the Gyeongbuk Research Institute, Ko Donghun, Director at the Korea Maritime Institute, Wang Jaephil, Professor at Pukyong National University, and about 10 other experts in secondary batteries.
This research project aims to fully launch the Korea-Iceland small electric vessel cooperation project, which has been underway since 2022, and will begin establishing the basic concept and detailed tasks for the creation of the industrial park.
The 'Pohang K-Battery Industrial Park for Small Electric Vessels' plans to build facilities for fishing vessel battery production and demonstration, a technology development and business center, and more in the hinterland of Yeongilman Port by 2030, thereby establishing infrastructure for carbon neutrality in the maritime and fisheries sector and fostering industries related to electric fishing vessels.
The Gyeongbuk Research Institute, the agency conducting the study, presented detailed plans for the future operation of the industrial park, including the establishment of a foundation for eco-friendly small vessel technology development, support for construction and retrofit subsidies, creation of conditions for industrial growth, development of smart fishing port infrastructure tailored to electric vessels, and the establishment of a foundation for hull standardization and practical verification.
Kwon Hyukwon, Director of Job and Economy at Pohang City, emphasized, "The establishment of the K-Battery Industrial Park is a valuable project tailored to Pohang, leveraging its geographical advantage by the sea to meet the demand for eco-friendly ship technology development. As this is still an untapped market, please work together to devise concrete measures to utilize national projects such as regulatory free zones, revise laws and systems, and build the industrial foundation."
Pohang City plans to establish a cooperative system among industry, academia, research, and government to foster the electric vessel industry, hold seminars and forums, and expand its global network to carry out overseas demonstration projects in countries such as the United Kingdom and Iceland.
