Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it will expand the operation of heat relief shelters to help residents exhausted by the continuous heatwave enjoy a healthy summer.
This year, the district designated 10 new shelters mainly in easily accessible community-based facilities such as small libraries, health centers, and banks, operating a total of 90 heat relief shelters.
The heat relief shelters will be open until September 30, with operating hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Bank heat relief shelters operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
When a heatwave advisory or warning is issued, 13 extended shelters (including community service centers, Geumcheon Han-nae Senior Welfare Center, Geumcheon Hoam Senior Welfare Center, and Cheongdam Comprehensive Social Welfare Center) will operate extended hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays, and until 9 p.m. on weekdays.
Meanwhile, the district has signed agreements with two local 24-hour bathhouses to pilot nighttime bathhouse operations. The nighttime bathhouses are available to low-income heat-vulnerable households aged 65 and older who are susceptible to heat-related illnesses. When a heatwave advisory is in effect, residents can use the bathhouses by bringing their ID and applying at their local community service center.
