Prosecutors Seek 7-Year Prison Sentence... Family Breaks Down After Verdict
A former soldier who threatened his wife to appear on adult broadcasts was sentenced to three years in prison, a lighter sentence than the prosecution's demand.
On the 12th, the Incheon District Court Criminal Division 5 (Judge Hong Jun-seo) sentenced former soldier A (37), who was indicted on charges of threats and confinement, to three years in prison, according to Yonhap News Agency. Previously, the prosecution had demanded seven years in prison for A at the sentencing hearing held on the 14th of last month.
Former soldier A, accused of confining his wife and forcing her to appear on adult broadcasts, is entering the Incheon District Court on February 4th to undergo a pre-arrest detention hearing (warrant review).

A was arrested and brought to trial on charges of threatening his wife B, in her 30s, from 2021 until last year, demanding the filming of sexual intercourse videos and participation in adult broadcasts. When B refused his demands, he confined her at home several times, and eventually, in December last year, B left a suicide note describing her suffering and passed away. A, who had served as a professional soldier, is reported to have been forcibly discharged due to this incident. In addition, he faces charges of distributing obscene materials under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, etc., for posting nude photos of women 98 times on the internet in 2011.
At the sentencing hearing last month, the prosecution explained the reason for the demand, saying, "The defendant posted nude photos of his spouse and confined and threatened her. The victim suffered severe mental distress and ultimately made an extreme choice, making the nature of the crime extremely serious." In response, A's defense attorney argued in the final statement, "The defendant did not distribute obscene materials against the victim's will," and "Through this case, the defendant clearly understands that distributing obscene materials, even with the subject's consent, is a crime, and he pledges never to commit such acts again." Regarding the threat charges, the defense added, "There was no intent to cause such harm," and appealed for leniency, saying, "Please consider that the messages were sent with the hope of rebuilding the family."
B's father also spoke in court that day, saying, "I want to clear my daughter's grievance," and tearfully pleaded, "Please punish him severely to prevent other victims from emerging." He stated, "A forced my daughter to appear on adult broadcasts, and when she refused, he threatened to send nude photos to her father," and "A flaunted himself by purchasing luxury cars, designer clothes, and shoes with income from adult broadcasts." He also said, "A made my daughter a slave by forbidding her from meeting or calling her father," and lamented, "After my daughter died, I cannot sleep without medication and have quit my job," expressing his pain.

The court stated, "The defendant's crime caused the victim to take her own life," and "The bereaved family, including the victim's father, is suffering extreme mental anguish." Regarding the sentencing rationale, the court explained, "The defendant threatened the victim after relying on her broadcast income and being asked for a divorce," and "Considering the motive of the crime, the defendant deserves severe punishment with imprisonment." After the sentence, which was much lighter than the prosecution's demand, B's father broke down outside the courtroom, sitting on the floor and crying, "Kill me."
