Samsung Electronics Union Encourages Total Strike Participation While Visiting Semiconductor Sites
The National Samsung Electronics Labor Union (Jeonsamno), which launched the first-ever general strike since Samsung Electronics was founded, appealed for participation in the strike while touring the semiconductor production lines.
On the 8th, when the National Samsung Electronics Labor Union, the largest union of Samsung Electronics, declared a three-day general strike, union members shouted slogans at the general strike rally held in front of the main gate of Samsung Electronics Hwaseong Plant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do. The 8-inch line is a process that produces legacy (older) semiconductors, relying heavily on manual work and thus has a higher dependence on labor compared to automated fine processes.
Jeonsamno stated through a YouTube live broadcast the day before, "The 8-inch line requires essential human labor, and if personnel withdraw from here, the line can be stopped," adding, "Our goal is to stop the 8-inch line first." They also revealed plans to halt the HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) equipment, saying, "HBM is the core semiconductor that management considers most important."
Since the strike aims to cause "production disruption," the union intends to increase pressure on management by targeting the core semiconductor HBM.
Accordingly, Jeonsamno plans to continue the rally as scheduled on the 12th in front of the HBM line cafeteria at the Pyeongtaek campus.
