"Original Design" Claim Amid Plagiarism Allegations Over Winning Entry at Chungnam Arts Center
Design Competition Jury Also Concludes "Not Plagiarism"
Chungnam Province has dismissed allegations of plagiarism regarding the winning design for the Chungnam Arts Center.
According to the province on the 9th, the consortium of Siaplan Architects, 3XN (Australia), and MDA Architects was recently selected as the winner of the design competition for the Chungnam Arts Center.
However, a complaint was filed claiming that the roof design closely resembles that of a concert hall in Europe.
Um Doyong, head architect at Siaplan Architects, stated at a press conference held at the provincial government office on the same day, "Our design is an original creation developed by our company over time."
He further explained, "Our roof design is layered, with each section rising in parts. Functionally, it is intended to conceal the fly tower, while aesthetically, it is meant to create an object-like impression when viewed from outside. It is completely different from the design it is being compared to."
The design competition jury reportedly also discussed the plagiarism issue again and concluded that it was not plagiarism.
Kim Yongman, head of the Arts Center Task Force, stated, "It is difficult to say that a slanted roof design is unique to any one person."
