On the 24th, NBC News and others reported the story of Callie Wims (23), a victim of the shooting that occurred on the 21st at a grocery store in Poydais, Arkansas. Mike Hagy, the Arkansas Police Chief, described Wims as having "shown the most selfless act I have ever seen." Chief Hagy said, "Instead of running away from the store, she stopped to use her professional nursing skills to help others," adding, "But in the end, she herself became a victim."
Wims' mother, Helen Browning (53), tearfully said in an interview, "Our daughter always helped people," and added, "Even knowing she could get hurt, she would have helped someone until the very end." Wims' father, Tommy Wims, also expressed grief, saying, "Callie died doing what she always did in life?helping others."
It has been revealed that Wims had a 10-month-old daughter named Ivy, which has deepened the sadness. Browning recalled that just an hour before the incident, Wims was amazed and happy that Ivy had grown enough to sleep soundly until 9 a.m. Browning said she now plans to take care of her granddaughter, adding, "Ivy will know that her mother loved her and that she was the sunshine in her mother's eyes."
The police announced that four people, including Wims, died and nine others were injured in the shooting at the grocery store in Poydais on the 21st. Among the injured were two police officers. The shooter was identified as Travis Eugene Posy (44), a man living in New Edinburg, a small town on the outskirts of the city. Police said his motive remains unclear, but he appears to have no personal connection to the victims.
On the day of the incident, he arrived at the grocery store by car armed with a shotgun and handgun, began shooting at people from the parking lot, and indiscriminately fired at employees and visitors inside the store. The perpetrator resisted by shooting at police officers who arrived on the scene within minutes but was eventually shot and apprehended with minor injuries. Browning said she knows Posy because he attended school with her youngest brother and added, "I never thought he would commit such a violent act."
