Quiet as a Library... DL E&C's 'The Silent Hood' Wins Jang Young-sil Award
DL E&C announced on the 24th that its kitchen hood, the 'D-Silent Hood,' jointly developed with the home appliance specialist Himpel, has received the Jang Young-sil Award. Named after the Joseon Dynasty scientist Jang Young-sil, this award is hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT to recognize outstanding research achievements by companies.

View original imageThe D-Silent Hood is characterized by its revolutionary noise reduction compared to existing kitchen hood products. DL E&C and Himpel addressed the root cause of noise by developing and utilizing a low-noise fan and a fan case with excellent soundproofing capabilities.
Additionally, they applied the industry's first patented 'In Line' structure technology to reduce air resistance. This aligns the direction of incoming smoke and the position of the fan in a straight line. In existing products, the fan and duct directions are bent at 90 degrees, causing smoke to hit the duct multiple times, amplifying the noise.
The actual operating noise of this product is at the level of 30 to 52 decibels (dB), which is more than 20 dB lower than existing products. When operating at the lowest level, the noise generated is only at the level of a library (32 dB).
The hood’s suction power has been significantly enhanced. The two companies derived the optimal airflow suitable for domestic residential culture and developed 'constant airflow technology' that maintains suction power consistently across various kitchen environments. This strongly absorbs heat, odors, gases, and fine dust generated during cooking.
The D-Silent Hood also features a 'Post Purge' function. Even after turning off the power, it completely expels harmful gases and vapors remaining in the surroundings for 30 seconds. It absorbs and discharges pollutants lingering in the kitchen at a noise level so low that users hardly notice.
Last year, the D-Silent Hood sold about 19,000 units mainly through business-to-business (B2B) channels. It is installed in DL E&C’s 'e-Pyeonhansesang' apartments and others. This year, sales are expected to increase by more than 60% compared to the previous year as it expands into business-to-consumer (B2C) markets.
DL E&C stated that the D-Silent Hood is a model case of win-win cooperation between large and small enterprises to solve social issues. The two companies collaborated throughout the entire product development process?from setting development goals, preliminary research, development, performance verification, to certification?to create the D-Silent Hood.
In addition to Himpel, DL E&C is also focusing on developing various new technologies with partners, such as recently collaborating with TankTech, a small and medium-sized enterprise specializing in ship equipment based in Busan, to develop a 'building electric vehicle fire suppression system.'
