Selection of Winning Design for Chungnam Arts Center... Scheduled to Open in 2029
Consortium of Siaplan Architects, 3XN (Australia), and MDA Architects Selected
Chungnam Province announced on the 24th that the consortium of Sia Plan Architects Office, 3XN (Australia), and MDA Architects Office was selected as the winning design for the Chungnam Arts Center design competition.
The province plans to build the Chungnam Arts Center with a total project cost of 122.7 billion KRW, covering a total floor area of 14,080㎡ within the cultural facility district of Naepo New City. To construct a world-class arts center, an international open design competition was held, and among the 27 teams that applied, the consortium of Sia Plan Architects Office, 3XN (Australia), and MDA Architects Office was selected.
They proposed the Chungnam Arts Center as a connection point between nature and the city, promoting interaction with surrounding facilities centered on performing arts, and serving as a "cultural exchange hub" that connects people.
The winning design received praise for its splendid yet restrained form featuring elegant roof curves harmonizing with Yongbong Mountain and Suam Mountain. The interior is finished with warm-toned wood, creating a stylish space that blends with nature. The exterior roof will be equipped with renewable energy facilities using solar panels, and eco-friendly certified materials will be applied, aiming for energy efficiency and sustainability, which received positive evaluations.
The province plans to sign a design contract with the three-company consortium next month and aims to start construction in 2026 with an opening scheduled for 2029.
