Nowon-gu Hosts This Year's Book Relay and One-Line Review Event
Event for Writing One-Line Reviews on 'Sajamart' (by Kim Yu) and 'Itorol Pyeongbanhan Mirae' (by Kim Yeonsu), Selected as 'Book of the Year'... Quarterly 'One-Line Review of the Month' Winners Receive 'Nowon-gu One Book Reading' Goods
Sharing and Expanding the Value of Social Reading through Discussion and Empathy via 'One Book' Reading
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold a relay event and one-line review event for the ‘Book of the Year.’
The ‘Book of the Year’ is a social reading campaign based on a book selected through recommendations from Nowon-gu residents, where participants read, discuss, and share experiences together. The ‘Nowon-gu One Book Reading’ project, which the district government officially launched last year, aims to strengthen the local community through social reading activities done ‘together’ with residents.
The resident voting for selecting the 2024 Book of the Year was conducted online and offline from April 11 to 13, with a total of 892 participants. As a result, two books were selected: Sajamart (Kim Yu / Cheongaebarame / 2023), which deals with the theme of ‘prejudice,’ and Such an Ordinary Future (Kim Yeon-su / Munhakdongne / 2022), which tells stories of love and life after the apocalypse. These were declared the ‘Books of the Year’ at the ‘Nowon Book Festival’ held on April 13.
The district has also prepared engaging events related to the two books directly selected by residents as the ‘2024 Books of the Year.’ This is to encourage not only personal reading but also shared reading discussions and the activation of cultural communities.
The first event is the 2024 ‘Nowon-gu One Book Reading’ one-line review event. After reading the ‘Book of the Year,’ participants can scan the QR code attached to the book or promotional materials and leave a one-line review in the review section for the book. Each quarter, ‘One-line Review of the Month’ will be selected, and 10 winners will receive ‘Nowon-gu One Book Reading’ merchandise.
The second event is the 2024 ‘Nowon-gu One Book Reading’ relay reading event. The relay starter, such as library staff and activists, will first deliver the book to the relay storage, and then residents can participate voluntarily by using the book storage set up in each library to read.
Through the relay, the concept of personal reading is transcended, and reading activities are encouraged by creating interest through a playful feeling. By running the relay reading and one-line review events together, it is possible to expand reading to cover various themes and communicate with different generations.
Meanwhile, the district operates various library programs in addition to the ‘Book of the Year’ relay and one-line review events. These include the reading community ‘Chaekmomo,’ lectures by selected authors and related experts called ‘Meeting with the Author,’ and ‘One Book Story,’ where participants read, discuss, and engage in post-reading activities related to the selected book. Through these diverse contents, the district plans to encourage residents’ reading activities.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “It is important to continuously develop and provide interesting reading content to support residents’ reading activities,” adding, “We will continue to run various programs through one book reading that allow residents to share thoughts and emotions and communicate with each other.”
