Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gijae) announced that it will operate the ‘Summer Vacation Health Plus Class,’ consisting of exercise necessary for growth and physical fitness improvement and nutrition education for forming proper eating habits, targeting lower-grade elementary school students from July 26 to August 13.
The I-Won Center Health Plus Class was planned to promote healthy growth of children during vacations when physical activity tends to decrease, and this year marks its 9th year since the first operation in 2016. So far, 128 lectures have been conducted, producing about 2,700 students.
This ‘Summer Vacation Health Plus Class’ consists of a total of 8 sessions, including 7 exercise classes and 1 nutrition class. Each class lasts for 60 minutes.
Especially this year, to improve the muscle strength and cardiopulmonary endurance of children with less outdoor activity, ‘Strength Circuit Training’ was newly introduced into the exercise class program. ‘Circuit Training’ is a fitness training method that maximizes efficiency by performing various exercises at short intervals with repeated rest. Under the guidance of a child-specialized physical education instructor, students participate in strength and aerobic exercises such as planks, squats, relay running, push-ups, and stretching, developing not only physical fitness but also cooperation and a sense of achievement.
Additionally, jump rope classes will be conducted to help improve cardiopulmonary endurance through basic postures, advanced moves, music and group jump rope, and jump rope relay running.
The final session, nutrition education, is part of a campaign to reduce sugar intake, where children will make low-sugar fruit drinks themselves to learn proper eating habits.
The district will conduct body composition tests before and after participation for all participants and compare and check the balance of muscle mass and physical development through one-on-one customized health consultations.
Furthermore, high-risk groups such as those with obesity will receive follow-up management, and nutrition counseling based on food exchange tables will be provided to improve eating habits, conveying the importance of healthy eating habits.
The target participants for the ‘Summer Vacation Health Plus Class’ are 30 elementary school students in grades 1 to 3, and recruitment will be on a first-come, first-served basis through the district office’s integrated reservation portal on the website from July 15 to July 19.
Located in the Health Healing Culture Center, Yangcheon-gu I-Won Center provides customized health management services by growth stage for children under 12, including vision and blood sugar tests, ADHD screening tests, and nutrition counseling.
Also, the health experience center, designed with seven unique themes tailored to children’s perspectives, serves as a health playground where children learn proper lifestyle habits such as infectious disease prevention, oral health, and exercise.
