Last Week 238,000 Claims... Down Compared to the Previous Week
Last week, the number of new unemployment benefit claims in the United States exceeded market expectations.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor on the 20th (local time), the number of new unemployment benefit claims for the week of June 9-15 was recorded at 238,000. This slightly surpassed the expert forecast of 235,000. It decreased compared to the revised figure of 243,000 from the previous week.
The number of new unemployment benefit claims reflects corporate layoff trends. Compared to the period before the COVID-19 pandemic, it remains historically low.

The number of continuing unemployment benefit claims, which are filed by those applying for benefits for at least two weeks, was recorded at 1,828,000 for the week of June 2-8. This is an increase of 15,000 from the previous week.
