A Total of 45,784 Deaths from the Turkey Earthquake
Official Statistics Released... Lower Than Initial Estimates
The number of deaths in T?rkiye from last year's earthquake in T?rkiye and Syria, considered one of the worst natural disasters of the 21st century, has been officially counted at about 45,000.
T?rkiye's Statistical Institute announced on the 14th (local time) in the 2023 death and cause of death statistics that a total of 45,784 people died due to the earthquake that occurred on February 6 last year.
This is slightly lower than the 53,537 deaths previously estimated by T?rkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority. The number of injured counted by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority is 107,213.
The total number of deaths in T?rkiye last year was 525,814, an increase of 4.1% from 505,269 the previous year. Excluding the earthquake deaths, the number of deaths actually decreased, showing the significant human toll of the earthquake.
On February 6 last year, two earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 struck southeastern T?rkiye near the Syrian border, affecting an area of about 120,000 km² across 11 provinces. Approximately 676,000 houses and 116,000 other buildings were destroyed or damaged.
