Boseong Spring Potato Production Ranks First Nationwide, New Potato Harvest in Full Swing

Crispy BoSeong Potatoes Popular for Their Sea Breeze Flavor

In Boseong-gun, the top producer of spring potatoes nationwide (as of June 2023), the new potato harvest has been in full swing since mid-May.

Boseong potatoes are cultivated by about 1,000 farms over approximately 930 hectares, accounting for 50% of Jeonnam's spring potato production and are sold nationwide. Harvesting begins in mid-May and is expected to ship 14,000 tons by the end of June.

Boseong potatoes, grown along the coastal area of Deukryangman where they are exposed to sea breezes, are known for their fluffy texture and savory taste.

In particular, the Hoecheon-myeon and Deukryang-myeon areas have excellent drainage, promoting good potato growth, and boast stable production by minimizing pest and disease outbreaks through long experience and expertise.

Additionally, the Boseong-gun Agricultural Technology Center directly supplies seed potatoes of the ‘Chubaek’ and ‘Geumseon’ varieties to farms, ensuring even more stable potato production.

Boseong-gun cultivates various varieties to suit consumer preferences. The main varieties include the well-known ‘Sumi’, the new variety ‘Geumseon’, the cooking-specialized ‘Chubaek’, and the excellent processing varieties ‘Dubaek’ and ‘Daeseo’.

Among them, ‘Geumseon’ underwent a field evaluation meeting for expanded distribution, comparing growth, disease resistance, yield, quality, and taste, receiving high praise from pilot farms and experts for its texture and flavor.

This year’s freshly harvested seasonal Boseong potatoes can also be purchased through ‘Boseong Mall’, Boseong-gun’s online agricultural direct trading market.

An official from the county stated, “Boseong-gun aims to produce potatoes that satisfy both producers and consumers by developing new varieties that meet consumer preferences, supplying high-quality seed potatoes, and expanding eco-friendly cultivation areas to firmly maintain the brand reputation of Boseong potatoes. We will strive to promote the quality and nutritional value of Boseong potatoes widely so they can receive even greater love nationwide.”
