Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has established and will actively implement the "2024 Yeongdeungpo-gu Traffic Safety Implementation Plan" to create a safe and pleasant traffic environment.
Last year, the total number of traffic accidents in Yeongdeungpo-gu was 1,909 (Source: Yeongdeungpo Police Station), and all fatal accidents were analyzed to be caused by drivers' negligence and failure to drive safely.
Additionally, according to the traffic accident status by age group, the number of accidents involving children and adolescents has increased.
Based on these statistics, the district set a goal to "reduce traffic accidents by 10% compared to the previous year" and established the "2024 Traffic Safety Implementation Plan" with a total budget of 2.88 billion KRW.
This plan consists of 23 projects across four main areas: ▲road traffic ▲vulnerable road users ▲bicycle traffic ▲advancement of traffic culture.
In particular, the district focuses on traffic safety measures around crosswalks and side roads, which are high pedestrian accident areas, to prevent traffic accidents involving children and adolescents caused by failure to drive safely.
First, to prevent traffic accidents near school routes intersections and crosswalks, the plan includes ▲installing pedestrian caution signs for right turns at 50 major crosswalks in the area, and ▲installing jaywalking prevention facilities at two locations, including the Nodul-ro entrance/exit in Yangpyeong 2-dong.
Also, a consultative body will be formed to promptly repair malfunctioning ground traffic lights upon receiving reports.
Furthermore, to prevent traffic accidents on side roads, the plan will ▲carry out customized facility improvement construction at four locations including Shinyoung Elementary School, ▲expand three unmanned speed and signal violation cameras, and ▲construct sidewalks (expansion) and new crosswalks at three locations including the rear gate area of Dangsan Middle School.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, "We will actively promote this project aiming to reduce traffic accidents involving children and adolescents," and added, "We will continue to create a safe traffic environment for both drivers and pedestrians through practical projects for accident prevention."
