View original imageJeju Air, the first low-cost carrier (LCC) in Korea, celebrated its 18th anniversary since its inaugural flight. The number of passengers has grown by an average of 25% annually, surpassing 10 million passengers.
Jeju Air announced on the 5th that it marked its 18th anniversary. It is recognized for opening the LCC market since its first flight on June 5, 2006, on the Jeju-Gimpo route.
The number of passengers carried by Jeju Air increased from 250,000 in its first year to surpassing 10 million for the first time in 2017. After reaching a peak of 13.24 million in 2019, the numbers slightly declined due to the impact of COVID-19 but recovered to 12.31 million last year. In July of last year, Jeju Air became the first domestic LCC to exceed 100 million cumulative passengers. The average annual passenger growth rate since its launch is 25.8%.
Jeju Air also emphasized the formation of a multi-competitor system with its emergence. It explained that consumer choice increased and it led the popularization of air travel. Currently, Jeju Air operates 66 routes to 47 cities across the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and Oceania.
