Lee Jae-myung "Standing Committee Must Be Formed by June 7"... People's Power Pressured on 'Committee Formation'
Lee: "Let's Complete the Organization of the Assembly According to the National Assembly Act and Majority Rule"
To Floor Leader Park Chandae: "Please Expedite the Process"
The Democratic Party of Korea repeatedly emphasized its stance to complete the organization of the 22nd National Assembly by June 7, as stipulated by the National Assembly Act. This is interpreted as an intention to prevent the People Power Party from delaying the organization negotiations by opposing the bill.
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, said at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the morning of the 31st, "This time, we must complete the formation of standing committees by June 7," and added, "If the ruling party opposes and does not agree, should we postpone it until an agreement is reached?" He continued, "Isn't it undemocratic to be dragged around just because a minority is being stubborn or unfairly holding out?" and said, "We will try our best to reach a compromise by the 7th (of next month), and if not, we will request the chairpersons." He also emphasized, "The 22nd National Assembly must not tolerate the tyranny of a minority that betrays the lives of the people."

Park Chan-dae, floor leader, said, "Dialogue and compromise are beautiful words, but that does not mean we should endlessly allow unreasonable demands and tantrums," urging, "People Power Party should come to negotiations today with a proposal for the composition of standing committee chairs." He asserted, "I don't know if they intend to trip us up from the start or provoke political strife like in the 21st National Assembly, but the Democratic Party has no intention of waiting indefinitely." Furthermore, he said, "Deliberately dragging out time will not create new opportunities," and added, "If differences are not narrowed by the set deadline, the majority opinion must be followed."
Woo Won-sik, Democratic Party lawmaker and candidate for the 22nd National Assembly Speaker, also expressed his position to set the deadline for organizing the Assembly as stipulated by the National Assembly Act. In a statement released on the 30th, Woo said, "I hope the spirit of the National Assembly Act will be upheld from the agreement on the organization," emphasizing, "We will continue to talk until the end, but if an agreement is still not reached, we must follow the National Assembly Act."

Leader Lee also urged that the convening of standing committees and plenary sessions after the organization be conducted according to the National Assembly Act. He said, "Let the National Assembly itself abide by the laws it has made," adding, "Because the National Assembly violates the law, issues for the livelihood of the people and the nation are often not even discussed." Furthermore, he said, "The National Assembly Act clearly states when standing committees and plenary sessions must be held," and added, "If this is to be changed, the ruling and opposition parties should negotiate, but if no agreement is reached, standing committees and plenary sessions must be held as prescribed by law."
