Nuclear Fusion Institute, Organizational Restructuring to Adapt to Research Environment Changes and Strengthen International Cooperation
The Korea Institute of Fusion Energy announced on the 31st that it will undertake an organizational restructuring to proactively respond to the rapidly changing domestic and international fusion research environment and to secure international leadership in fusion energy development.
This personnel change is a follow-up measure after the inauguration of the new president, Oh Young-guk. The fusion research organization, previously composed of two divisions?the KSTAR Research Headquarters and the Fusion Engineering Research Headquarters?has been reorganized into four divisions: KSTAR Research Headquarters, Tokamak Operation Technology Headquarters, Fusion Engineering Technology Headquarters, and Fusion Digital Research Headquarters. As the integration of digital technologies such as digital twins and AI expands in the fusion field, a specialized organization has been newly established to lead this effort, and an individual organization has been formed to advance fusion device operation technology based on the operational capabilities of the KSTAR device.
The Plasma Technology Institute has been reorganized into three sectors?fundamental technology, convergence technology, and strategic technology?considering the characteristics and goals of plasma technology and to develop strategic technologies addressing national issues.
To accelerate the demonstration of fusion energy and secure innovative technologies through win-win cooperation with private companies, a Corporate Cooperation Office has been established. Additionally, to lay the groundwork for a leap in fusion technology through diversification and expansion of international cooperation, an International Cooperation Office has been newly created.
