[Harumanbo] Haeparang-gil Course 9 Where Nature and Industrialized City Blend
‘Haepalanggil’ is a 750 km walking trail consisting of a total of 50 courses that connect the coastal paths, forest trails, and village roads along the East Coast, from Oryukdo Sunrise Park in Busan to the Unification Observatory in Goseong, Gangwon.
Haepalanggil is a compound word combining the symbol of the East Sea, the ‘rising sun,’ the blue color of the sea, ‘parang,’ and the particle ‘rang,’ meaning ‘together.’ It means ‘a path where you walk together with the sound of waves, gazing at the rising sun and the blue sea.’
Course 9 of Haepalanggil is a representative course where you can enjoy the view of Ulsan, a city where nature and industrialization coexist. It starts from Ilsan Beach and continues to Jeongjahang Port, with a total length of 19 km and takes about 7 hours.
Leaving Ilsan Beach, the course heads toward the city center. Walking along the Ulsan Mipo National Industrial Complex, the first national industrial complex in Korea, you can see the history of Korea’s modernization. Along this path, you will pass the Hyundai Art Park, a park created by Hyundai Heavy Industries, a leading company in Ulsan.
The course leaves the city and heads back to the coast. Along this path, you can see Jujeon Bongsudae. Bongsu was a military communication system used in the past when communication means were not well developed. It was installed on mountain peaks with good views to inform the central government of the security of borders and coasts by torchlight at night and smoke signals during the day.
After passing through Keunbul Port and Jujeon Port along the coastal path, you will reach Jujeon Mongdol Beach, one of the 12 scenic spots of Ulsan. This is a popular summer beach destination for Ulsan citizens. Jujeon means ‘red land,’ referring to the reddish color of the soil. Mongdol refers to smooth, rounded stones. Along the 1.5 km coastline of the East Coast, black, round Mongdol stones with diameters of 3 to 6 cm are stretched out, creating a spectacular view.

Walking along the long coastline, the course enters a forest trail. Haepalanggil Course 9 encompasses the sea, the city, and the forest. After walking along the winding forest path, the course reaches its final destination, Jeongjahang Port. This place has been a migratory route for whales since prehistoric times and was used as an advanced base for whaling. In the nearby small fishing village, you can feel the warm hospitality of the coastal people.
