"Used in Hospitals Too" PASS Mobile ID Subscribers Surpass 10 Million
Mobile Driver's License and Resident Registration Card
Replaced by PASS Verification Service
Top 3 Telecoms "Will Expand Usage"
The number of subscribers to the PASS mobile ID, used for identity verification and adult authentication procedures at hospitals, community centers, convenience stores, and more, has surpassed 10 million.
SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus announced in a joint press release on the 30th that the number of subscribers to the PASS mobile driver’s license and resident registration card verification service has exceeded 10 million.
PASS was the first in Korea to provide a mobile driver’s license verification service through an application (app) in June 2020 via the ICT regulatory sandbox. Later, in November 2022, it added the resident registration card verification service, leading the expansion of mobile ID usage.
Users can conveniently and securely register by capturing their physical ID with the PASS app or entering information, enabling identity verification and facial recognition through an electronic method that prevents forgery and alteration.
The PASS mobile ID is used in public sectors such as community centers, police driver’s license verification, public election polling stations, national qualification exam sites, and domestic airline check-in. It is also utilized in various private sectors for identity verification or adult authentication procedures, including convenience stores, unmanned vending machines, movie theaters, and rental cars.
According to the one-person-one-device policy, registration is only possible on phones equipped with a SIM card registered under the user’s name.
Since the 20th, with the mandatory identity verification at medical institutions such as hospitals and clinics, it is now possible to present the mobile ID instead of a physical ID. Starting in July, the mobile ID QR service will be offered for the first time domestically at major university hospital service counters and unmanned kiosks at hospitals and clinics nationwide.
