This forum was organized to raise public awareness of climate change and to explore monitoring, prediction, and greenhouse gas reduction measures for future generations.
The event began with an opening speech by Kang Do-hyung, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, followed by three detailed sessions on ▲the severity of the climate crisis, ▲climate change monitoring and prediction, and ▲greenhouse gas reduction, featuring presentations and in-depth discussions by experts in each field.
At the forum, Kang Hyunwoo, Director of the Ocean Climate Solutions Research Division at KIOST, gave a presentation on 'Marine Environment and Ecosystem Monitoring and Prediction for Consensus-Based Ocean Climate Information Services,' emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and prediction of ocean climate not only in the waters surrounding Korea but also in the open ocean and polar regions.
KIOST has developed and utilizes an Earth system model that simulates the energy and carbon cycles on the planet to strengthen monitoring and prediction of climate change. Through the Ocean Climate Prediction Center, KIOST conducts monthly analyses of ocean climate conditions and seasonal forecasts, providing the generated ocean climate information.
At the venue, achievements of related organizations engaged in responding to ocean climate change, such as KIOST, the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, and the National Institute of Ocean Science, were exhibited.
Lee Heeseung, President of KIOST, stated, "This forum is a meaningful occasion to diagnose the current state of climate change, a global concern, and to seek solutions for moving toward a carbon-neutral society. We will continue our efforts to expand public awareness so that anyone can easily access information on ocean climate change monitoring and prediction."
